Lets Talk About Sugar
October 13, 2022 • 26 MIN
"Sugar Free... No Sugar Added... Low Sugar - No Artificial Sweeteners... LOWER Sugar" These popular phrases can be found front and center on a lot of products in your supermarket these days. They have mostly replaced the "fat free" phrases that dominated the 90s and early 2000s. With the consumer shift in focus from fat conscience to sugar conscience, so has the marketing on many food labels. The attempt to wrongly persuade the public that "non-fat" is healthy has led to a largely over-fat society. Sugar consumption in the United States had skyrocketed starting in the 20th century, and the overweight/obesity epidemic has followed right along with it. The overweight/obesity epidemic isn't the only problem, excess sugar consumption can lead to many other negative health effects such as developing diabetes. With Halloween upon us this month and candy filling the shelves at the supermarket (and probably your cabinets at home), Kelly and Mike want to give a brief rundown of the facts about sugar. You can listen to this conversation about sugar on Episode 85 of the Next Gen Radio Podcast.
Should You Be Training Barefoot?
October 6, 2022 • 38 MIN
Barefoot training has gained popularity over the years as the "functional training" trend has become more popularized. It used to be reserved for the extreme fitness enthusiasts, and those who wanted to wear goofy looking toe shoes to the gym. Working out without wearing shoes may seem strange to some people - especially for those who go to a "regular" big box gym. I can probably guarantee that most of them probably have a "no shoes no service" type rule, or maybe even an alarm to embarrass you in front of all of the other members for doing something against their rules (judgment-free embarrassment that is...) However, barefoot training has many benefits that if implemented correctly, can make a big difference for someone's health and fitness. In episode 84, we go into all of the benefits of training barefoot, and whether or not it is right for you.
Proper Training Levels for Youth Athletes
October 3, 2022 • 32 MIN
In today's hyper competitive environment of youth sports, kids are starting to workout at a younger and younger age. The old adage that "lifting weights will stunt a kids growth" has been debunked many times over at this point. However, starting a kid's training without building the fundamentals first can be detrimental to their long term development. In episode 83 of the Next Gen Radio Podcast, we discuss the evolution of youth training inside of Next Generation Training Center. We talk about how an athlete starts in our "Fundamentals" training group, and graduates to the "Advanced" training group once they demonstrate proficiency in certain training techniques. This episode is filled with great information for anyone who has a kid who is an athlete, and is thinking about getting them started in the gym.
