They infused this false self with grandiose ideas, and they use manipulation and control to get others to support the distorted image they present to the world. This is what lies at the heart of why narcissists fear intimacy. There are several feelings that intimacy invokes in the narcissist, all of which make them very nervous about getting too close to anyone.
