Psych for Life with Dr. Amanda Ferguson
Teen mental health and the enduring power of parents, with Daisy Turnbull
June 14, 2022
In this wonderfully engaging yet highly insightful episode, I sit down with Daisy Turnbull, a secondary school teacher of 10 years, published author of two books, Lifeline counsellor and mother of two. We discuss her new book “50 Questions to Ask Your Teens”, the many facets of raising teens, and some of the most powerful processes parents can adopt during this part of their parenting journey.    Daisy emphasises that teens are a work in progress and develop predominantly through their lived experiences. She highlights how parents are usually learning many things – like setting and managing boundaries – at the same time as their teens. Plus the importance of parents and teens "starting great conversations".

Daisy emphasises that teens are a work in progress and develop predominantly through their lived experiences. She highlights how parents are usually learning many things – like setting and managing boundaries – at the same time as their teens. Daisy encourages parents and teens to “start great conversations” about these things. She urges parents to think about what kind of relationship they want with their adult children and how they intend to get there.

Daisy gives many great tips, such as asking teen’s their opinions on things, like pornography, and setting time limits for difficult conversations with them. She advises parents to adopt the position of a “coaching parent”: encouraging teens to develop their own decisions, and that they also have regular discussions with other trusted adults in both your lives.

You can purchase Daisy Turnbull’s books “50 Questions to Ask Your Teens” and “50 risks with Kids” at all good bookstores.
