Chosen family: What to do when you have no biological family to rely on or you need parenting support as an adult
September 14, 2020 • 33 MIN
Ideally, we grow up in a loving family and grow into adulthood feeling united and supported but this is often not the case. Dr Amanda Ferguson discusses how we can find spiritual or surrogate family members when our biological family is dysfunctional, lets us down or doesn't exist in our lives. Acknowledging our lack of good family relationships is painful and lonely. The possibility of a second chance - and even more chances - to create a sense of family is liberating and fulfilling. For instance, feeling motherless can be healed by finding as many mother figures as it takes for us to eventually feel we have been mothered. Surrogate family relationships usually evolve naturally and can't be forced. They give each person a sense of gaining what they were missing. Dr. Amanda shows how the world holds all these potential people we need to feel loved and to love. It's never too late to have a happy family. Eric shows us how to be there for both ourselves and our partners and how to deal with 'disturbances' to the state of love we share. He takes us through why touch is so important, how having successful relationships requires us to be ‘awake’ and how younger generations are now focusing on having deeper, more conscious relationships. Hear Daniel’s fascinating knowledge and deeply experienced, insightful - and thought-provoking - opinions about the various scientific theories and findings on dreams. Although Daniel is a hard scientist, many of the scientific findings are extraordinary – particularly about lucid dreaming and shared dreaming between two people. Hear about his research into dream speech recognition, Motor Behavior Reconstruction, recorded dream visual imagery using MRI and his project of animating a nocturnal dream from a sleep-lab, [using electromyography] – where an avatar says and does what the dreamer said and did. Daniel calls this a dream movie and says we already have the technology and will soon be able to record our dreams and view someone else's. He says this may help therapists in dream analysis, particularly with PTSD, but there are also pitfalls to be considered. Daniel calls this “inner space exploration” that’s been occurring while we have also been exploring outer space - both very much since the 1960s.
