Now that fireworks are legal in New Jersey, Vince thought he'd share some firecrackers with his kids, just the basic bonafide sparklers, nothing too intense and nothing that could injure anyone but would still impress a 3, 5 and 7 year old. Unfortunately his neighbor had the same idea except he went for the big gun fireworks.  The ones that were loud, went high into the sky and made Vince's firecrackers look like birthday candles. 

Here Vince is feeling inferior to his neighbor, when the one thing that everyone warns could happen, did. The stand that his neighbors firecracker was standing on, tipped over and the rocket launchers literally started coming directly at his house and near my kids.  In a moment of panic, Vince was yelling at his family to get in the house. It went from this is so exciting to this could really hurt someone in a matter of minutes. Vince's neighbor came over with his tail between had to apologize. And in that moment, Vince saw a teachable business moment.

Vince was comparing his fireworks to the neighbor whose looked bigger and louder and thus must be better. But just like business, things may seem bigger and better with your competitors but you never know what's really going on. The only thing you should be comparing your business to, is your previous year. The best thing you can do for yourself is keep track of your numbers. Stop worrying about what everyone else is doing and focus on your own progress.
