Managing your Mindset during times of change...
April 6, 2020 • 18 MIN
When the world suddenly becomes a very different place and so many things seem out of your control the one thing you can do is try to manage your mindset... How you respond in times of what feels like almost constant change is largely influenced by your mindset which is the combination of your thoughts, assumptions and beliefs about a thing or a situation. Mindset is a big part of what influences some people to fight over paper products in supermarkets, and others to donate their time and products to assist others... same global situation, very different responses... Mindset is often either looked at as some 'fluffy' concept or not considered at all, however given the number of things that are outside of your control, that feel uncertain or unfamiliar surely any tool that can help you to feel more empowered and show up as the type of person you want to be is one worth working with! In this podcast episode Shandra shares some insights on Mindset and how you can use it in your favour regardless of what's going on around you and how to balance out the constant stream of scary and negative news so you can support your body and brain to not fall into overwhelm. Also, given the current situation in the world right now, Shandra has created a new free resource, a podcast playlist to manage your mindset: 'Top 10 podcast episodes to Manage your Mindset in times of change' Click here to get access to an easy way to offset the negativity and focus on what you can control, and let go of the rest. Managing the Inner and Outer Game of Working for Yourself...
February 3, 2020 • 28 MIN
If you are going to make the change to working for yourself, you can't just focus on the outer game... It can be tempting to just get caught up with the "busy busy" to do list of actions and ticking things off your list, but the reality is that this is a trap! The bigger and more influential game is managing your inner game... This episode was inspired buy conversations with a few clients this week and the Australian Open being on.... Tennis is such a great analogy for business and life because you can have the skills and the know how, but how you show up, how you respond on the day, in each moment has a massive impact on the results... So yes working on the practical things is important - you have to take action, build your skills and competence on all the surface level stuff.... But can't only focus on that... Because whilst those things are important and need to be done - they are not the whole game and only focusing on them can leave you unprepared for the inner stuff that can and will come up. In this episode Shandra shares: Something a family member said early in her first business that she was unprepared for, and the impact it had a couple of recent client stories and examples to show how your inner game is linked to your outer game and results Ideas for how to focus more on your inner game "Your inner game dictates your outer game" -Fabienne Frederickson - American Millionaire mompreneur and author Thank you for listening! When is the 'Right' time to consider a career change?
September 23, 2019 • 21 MIN
After too many conversations with too many great women this week, who are stuck in a no win position of being unhappy or wanting more from their career, but waiting until the 'perfect' time, the 'right' time to do something about it. I say bollocks to that. There is no right time, no perfect time other than right now. If you wait for all your ducks to be in a row you will be waiting a very long time and either never make the change, or something not good will happen to force a move at some point - neither of which is a great outcome for you. So in this episode Shandra has a bit of a rant, shares some examples and gives you an invitation to make some sort of start towards working out what might be next for you... "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now" •Chinese proverb Thank you for listening.

One thing for you to be clear on, BEFORE you make any kind of career change...
August 19, 2019 • 25 MIN
There's one thing for you to make sure you are clear on, BEFORE you make any kind of career change... This week's episode is one designed to help you if you are in a work situation that is just ... not working for you anymore - or the clock is ticking on how long it's going to work for you... This episode talks about a few things that are really important for you to be clear on - before you make any kind of career move... Now your move might be ripping the band aid off - and quitting your job without a new role to go to - or it could be that your move is just starting to have some conversations about options, exploring what could be right for you given where you're at life stage wise... It's really important, so that you don't just leap away from where you are now into something new - only to find that you're no happier there, OR the happiness hit you get from something new only lasts a little while.... If you're in a job that is just no longer working for you, you're feeling disconnected, unfulfilled, unappreciated and maybe you're also having health issues... it's important that before you make any kind of rash decision that you actually allocate some time and energy to getting clear on a few things... "Learning who we are, what we want and what we're capable of - it's a lifelong process" The Power of Moments, Chip and Dan Heath This one thing for you to get clearer on will be invaluable as you start to move towards whatever is next for you work wise... to get you closer to doing work you actually enjoy again. Do you have 'Sideline Critics' who get vocal when you want to create some sort of change?
August 12, 2019 • 17 MIN
This episode is a spin off from last week's episode - '5 things working women can learn from ninja warrior' because at the end of that episode I realized there was a lot more I could have talked about and one of those things was about the impact of side line critics.... We all have side line critics in our lives and they become especially vocal when you're wanting to do something different from what you've been doing for work... Recently I've been doing some interviews with women who have made significant career change [they are for upcoming episodes of the podcast - so stay tuned for those very soon!] and one of the things that is a bit of a common theme is the impact of the people around them and what they say and think about the change they were wanting to make - both positively and negatively. When you're thinking of making a significant career change it's natural for there to be fear and uncertainty - and if you have someone in your life telling you all the reasons you shouldn't change, or being opinionated about what you 'should' do - then it's easy to just let their voice influence your actions... This episode explores the impact of Sideline critics and how you can handle them. Thank you for listening!
5 Things Working Women can Learn from Ninja Warrior
August 5, 2019 • 26 MIN
This episode has - obviously to those in Australia - been inspired by the recent series 'Aust Ninja Warrior' TV show.... If you haven't seen or heard of this show it is basically a competition where people go through a majorly challenging series of obstacles over water with the goal of completely the challenge without touching the water and hitting a buzzer at the end... It seriously inspiring to see what the human body and mind is capable of... SO it prompted this episode of 5 takeouts working women can get from Ninja Warrior. The episode shares: •The 5 takeouts •How they apply to Ninja Warrior competitors •How they apply to you as a working woman •Questions for you to consider to help you move forward in your career •Specific ideas for if you are wanting to make a significant career change "Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be." - George Sheehan Also - Shandra shares an exciting announcement about opening the doors to the exciting new program 'CEO You - Being your own boss in the business of your life'. The 3 Stages of Career Change - Part 3!
July 29, 2019 • 23 MIN
It's great to be at today's episode because it is part 3 of a 3 part mini episode series of the 3 stages of career change... The original intention was to just do one episode on this - but as I started it just sort of ended up that way so it could go a bit deeper into each phase rather than just skim over them - which means you would get more practical tips on what to look out for and actually do in each stage to keep you moving forward towards doing work you actually enjoy... So if you have listened to the last two episodes covering Part 1 & 2 - then you are ready to dive in to this episode.... Part 3 of the 3 stages of career change.... Also - here's the link to the free resource mentioned in this episode - The top 10 in-demand skills for women making career change. The 3 Stages of Career Change - Part 2
July 22, 2019 • 25 MIN
This episode is part 2 of a 3 part 'mini-series' about the 3 stages of career change, so if you haven't listened to part 1 you might want to go and listen to that as a lead in to this one... As a quick recap - when you're wanting to make some sort of career change you can want it to all just happen, for things to just hurry up so you can just be at the other side; where you're suddenly, magically in a new role or doing something new and you're enjoying it and earning great money and just generally loving life... and whilst that sounds like a nice place to get to - and it is... - it rarely happens as quick as you might like it to... Unfortunately it can take time to get the clarity that you need on what's next and how to get there, to do the things you need to do to make it happen - and so through looking back at my own experience making career change several times - and from all the many clients I have worked with to make change in their work life, I've identified 3 main phases in career change ... so wanted to share them so you can see where you're at currently and what you can focus on in each stage to keep you moving forward. The other thing is that these stages might also be visited multiple times throughout your change - depending on what you're wanting to do/achieve... there is likely to be a bit of rinse and repeat going on... Once you've worked through phase 1 and gotten the insights and take outs from that stage, then you want to move into stage 2, which is.... well you'll have to listen to find out! In this episode you will hear: •What stage 2 is •Why it's important •Examples of past clients it has helped •What to do during this phase •Things to watch out for Thank you for listening! Shandra

Do you have this in Demand skill for career change?
July 8, 2019 • 18 MIN
Thank you for being here and listening to this episode of the podcast.... Today's episode is about one of the most in demand skills - especially for women wanting to make some sort of significant career change... I'm doing this episode because I've just finished creating a great new free resource - 'Top 10 In Demand Skills for Women Making Career Change' and I want to share just one of them in this episode. I created the guide because I keep hearing from women who are at some sort of professional crossroad say things like - "I'm ready for some sort of change, but I'm worried that I don't have the skills I need to make that change..." or "I'm worried people wont value what I've done in the past because it's a different industry..." I say bollocks to that! You have a lifetime of experience and skills - a lot of which will be transferrable to other roles and industries. This episode shares just one of the skills you potentially already have - and shows how you can start to think about it in a way that will help you communicate your value as you make your move towards doing more meaningful work. "In the end, it is impossible to have a great life unless it is a meaningful life. And it is very difficult to have a meaningful life without meaningful work." -Jim Collins If you want to get the guide with all 10 In Demand Skills you can access it right here: https://www.thetransitlounge.com/in-demand-skills/ Thank you for listening!
It's time for a mid year check in and reset of your goals and priorities...
July 1, 2019 • 23 MIN
It seems like time is literally flying by - it's the middle of the year ALREADY! How did that happen? At this time of year it's too easy to beat yourself up for not having done all the things you thought you would have done, or would have liked to do by now.... but beating yourself up is not that helpful - and it definitely doesn't help you get any closer to achieving what you want! So instead - you can use your shock and disbelief to rev yourself up for a great second half of the year. In this podcast episode, Shandra share's: •4 steps to resetting your focus on the things that are most important to you •how to ensure you set a focus and goal that is achievable •something that makes her get her cranky pants on •an invitation for you to get some extra support and accountability "The bad news is time flies... the good news is - you're the pilot" •Michael Altshuler Don't let the rest of this year fly past like the first half - check in with yourself and reset and recommit to your goals so you can make the most of your time... thanks for listening!
How to leverage your language
June 10, 2019 • 11 MIN
There is so much power and influence in the words you use. I have always loved reading - still do, when I make the time for it - and I've had a common theme of communication throughout my working life, in different ways and so words and language is important to me. One thing I often hear as feedback from others is people saying things like "you're so good with words". In fact literally just minutes after I finished recording this episode about language I had a message from a friend asking me to help her with some words to handle a situation she was in! She said she remembered me saying something when we last spoke that she thought was really well said so wanted to use in an email. In short I care about words and the impact they have on yourself and others. Recently I have been playing around with a few alternatives to a common phrase we say to make it more empowering.... So this episode I share that phrase and some options of what you could say instead to make it feel more positive. Would love to know what you think and any other word games you play! Happy listening! June 3, 2019 • 17 MIN

"Our life is frittered away by detail, simplify simplify" - Henry David Thoreau American poet philosopher In this episode, Shandra shares: •some of the benefits of simplification •4 ways she is embracing simplifying - in very different areas of her life •what simplification means Thank you for listening!

3 Things people worry about losing if they change careers
May 13, 2019 • 20 MIN
Change is a constant...with or without making career change. No matter how hard we work or how hard we try there is nothing we can do to stop it.... but as human beings we often fight it, resist it or try to avoid it. When it comes to making career change there's a whole stack of resistance for many reasons! Part of it shows up as fears of things we worry we might lose if we were to change what we do for work... In this episode Shandra explores this concept of perceived loss... She shares: •The things she started doing when she was unhappy in her last role •One sentence that shifted her perspective on change •3 common fears of loss people have when making career change •The reality she has experienced after going through at least two major career changes herself Enjoy this episode and remember to share it with a friend who is thinking about making a move in their work life. How to be an optimist in times of change...
May 6, 2019 • 34 MIN
Did you know there are a stack of studies that show massive benefits to being an optimist? Optimism during times of change can be a great tool to use to help build your resilience and ability to handle life's challenges more easily. This is not to say that being an optimist means you ignore the stark and sometimes harsh realities of daily life, it's more about how you choose to interpret and respond to what's happening and you're sense of your own ability to change and grow through them... In this episode, Shandra shares: •What some studies have revealed about the benefits of optimism •the definition of optimism •the dangers of being one sided with optimism •10 practical ideas of things you can do to build you own sense of optimism •A compliment just for you :-) •the weirdest thing she has ever celebrated - it's very odd... •A new take on the glass is half full analogy Hope you enjoy listening and get some great ideas to inject some more optimism into your work and life. Is it time to find some time for you?
April 29, 2019 • 32 MIN
Most people go through phases - sometimes long phases! - where they feel like they just have no time for themselves. Life gets busy, there's so many thing competing for your attention so it's easy to get caught up in other people's priorities. "I just didn't have time" "I was too busy" "I don't have enough time" I've said all those things and probably many more and that's probably why I have become a bit curious about the concept of time and how we use it. This week's episode is about finding ways that you can actually find time for you. In this episode Shandra shares: •the training tip that rocked her world about time •uncomfortable truths about time and what we do with it •What a lack of time really means •What studies show we do with our memory of how we used our time •Which elements of time we are suck with and which we can do something about •3 things you can do to actually find some time for yourself Thank you for listening to this episode - hope it helps you make the most of your time!
One thing you need to do when you're feeling stuck
April 22, 2019 • 18 MIN
As an overachiever type you're probably used to a long to do list, a bias towards action taking and just getting things done. This is all well and good when you're in the flow and on a roll... but when things get all a bit too much, overwhelm kicks in and despite your best efforts and intentions things can start to get on top of you. You might start to feel like you're just stuck in a no win situation. That's when this one thing can be your best friend... even though it's not your favourite thing to do. In this episode Shandra share's why she thinks she struggles with this one thing, including a very recent example from her home life. Even though this may not be your preferred or go to response, this could be the one thing you would benefit from the most... Happy listening. Disclaimer - the audio level is a bit low on this episode as it was recorded 'on the road'
Which future You are you voting for?
April 15, 2019 • 22 MIN
Did you know that everyone has a version of their future self that they one day hope to be? Well your future self is actually being determined by the actions you take and the habits you create right now... Have you seen the movie Sliding Doors? Your life is a bit like that movie - with parallel versions of reality being possible depending on what you do and don't do. In this episode I have a bit of a rant about this idea and share: •What most people believe their future self will have more of •What determines the future self 'winner' •How you can start to tap into your vision of your future self •The different ways and areas of your life this can be applied to •Some commons traps that come up when people start to explore this idea, and a way around them Your future self will thank you for listening! What if too much choice is the problem in trying to make career change?
April 8, 2019 • 27 MIN
Today's episode was inspired by a conversation with someone who is definitely at a professional crossroad... She's actually quite successful by a lot of people's standards - has a couple of businesses that run mostly without too much of her input... lives pretty well off, but is at a point of really questioning what she's been doing, why she's doing it and what the hell she should do next... In this episode you will hear: •Something I used to believe that I've upgraded •A conversation from my 20's that really annoyed me •Why having too much choice is a problem •What you can do when you feel that way •How to have total confidence you will make the right choice for you Thank you for listening! Are you unhappy in your job, but know you can't leave yet?
April 1, 2019 • 23 MIN
There is nothing worse than being in a work situation where you are really unhappy, but feel stuck in it... I can say that because I have been there! About 5 years ago I was pretty unhappy in my job - annoyed at the things that were going on in the business, the people in charge, decisions being made and just generally the way the business was operating... but I still stayed... At one point amongst all of that, I read something that hit me like a brick and totally changed how I felt about the situation - so I wanted to share it with you in case it helps you to manage being in a 'less than optimal' work situation when you don't feel like you can leave it just yet... In this episode I share: •What was going on for me when I was unhappy in my job •The event that opened the door to a big shift - without me quitting my job! •The two part concept that was a game changer •How it impacted me •How you can experiment with this to instantly feel better about your work situation Happy Listening! x Shandra PS - This was the topic I was meant to share a few weeks ago - but when I realised I was wrong about which book I got this concept from I ended up doing an episode about when Certainty is the Enemy ... so if you haven't listened to it already, you can check that episode out too...

Sometimes certainty is the enemy
March 18, 2019 • 12 MIN
Have you ever had a level of certainty that turned out to work against you? Maybe believed something only to find out later that it wasn't actually true? This episode was supposed to be about something else altogether, but a process of certainty getting in the way of my progress lead me to pivot and change the episode to be about that! So this episode is instead of being about what it was originally going to be about, it's now about how believing something totally and wholeheartedly can actually work against you achieving what you want... It's a bit different to usual episodes - it's short and designed to get you thinking! In this episode Shandra shares: •Appreciation for feedback from podcast listeners •Something she have never really been that into, but that has been impactful •Questions for you on how to apply this principle practically for your benefit •A frustration about podcasting •A concept that will have you thinking about cookies! Career Reinvention The Good Bad and Ugly
February 4, 2019 • 29 MIN
When you think about Career Reinvention do you only think about the good stuff? Did you know that career reinvention also delivers some ugly side effects? After a few conversations this week that highlighted and reminded me of the less fun sides of reinventing your career, I wanted to explore this to make sure you are aware before you launch into a major change and so you're not shocked if one of these common issues hits you in the face along the way.... There's different phases that people go through when they hit a professional crossroad - some phases they stay in for loner than others.... but when you get to a point where you have made the decision to do something different, to make a change, there can be an initial buzz of adrenaline and excitement about beginning something new... and then.... there's often a crash... That sense of impending doom and questioning of what is going to happen now?!?! What was I thinking? At that stage a couple of things can happen and so in this episode I wanted to share some insights so you can be on the look out for them, not beat yourself up too much if you consider or do any of these things and you can have a bit of a strategy of how you want to handle it. This episode includes: •what can happen when you rush to fill the void •how your confidence gets impacted •what can happen if you wait too long to make your plan •the impact of feeling like the new kid at school... I'm normally a pretty positive person, often looking for the upside, BUT after a couple of conversations this week and seeing the impact on usually super confident passionate people when some of these dark sides of career change kick in - EVEN IF YOU'VE CHOSEN IT YOURSELF!!! - I really wanted to share these thoughts so you can feel prepared and ready to rock your next career reinvention... "Our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers."  M. When i hit a few hurdles and pain points I started getting curious about why I was continuing to do it - even though it was frustrating the hell out of me.... and I stumbled on some thoughts that overlapped with important leadership skills, so I thought it deserved a podcast episode to explore and share them a bit more. In this episode you will hear: •How leadership is defined by the Oxford dictionary •The 6 Leadership skills you can learn and develop from a jigsaw puzzle •How each one applies to jigsaws and leadership •Ideas for you to assist you to make progress on your most important projects There's also a random movie recommendation .... just to keep things interesting... 5 Things You Need to Thrive This Year
January 21, 2019 • 16 MIN
Do you want to feel like you are getting beyond just surviving so you can thrive this year? What do you actually need to thrive in work and life? Decades ago in the 40's and 50's, psychologist Abraham Maslow created a now famous model for human motivation that he called the 'Hierarchy of Needs'. It's a pyramid shaped model with the most basic fundamental needs at the bottom and progresses up through 5 layers towards the more sophisticated, or 'optional' aspect of human flourishing. Maslow believed that this top of the pyramid was the ultimate goal of all human existence... In this modern era work has expanded to become a n even bigger part of how we spend our time, and a massive contributor to if we feel like we are able to thrive. More and more people are opting to do work that feels more meaningful to them, and for many people - myself included! - the 'optional' pursuit of the top of Maslow's pyramid feels less optional and more like a driving force in life and work. What about you? What do you need to thrive this year? In this episode we explore: 1. The details of Maslow's Hierarchy 2. More recent research which challenges some of Maslow's assumptions 3. Which level that research discovered has the biggest impact on everyday happiness 4. A story of an unusual example of how it can be used to increase your bank balance 5. The first time I wrote down the things I think I need to thrive 6. A couple of ideas on how you can identify your top 5 things you need to thrive this year As you launch into another year full of busyness, now is a great time for you to explore what you think you need to thrive so that as the year unfolds, you can consider and make the choices and decisions that will help you create life and work that serves and supports you to truly thrive. Remember - do whatever you can to create a future you will love, through the choices you make today. Enjoy this episode and thank you for listening! How Not to Fail at Your New Year Resolutions
January 14, 2019 • 24 MIN
Why is it that SO MANY people fail their new year resolutions? Is it even possible not to???? A massive percentage of people will have 'failed' their resolutions by the second week of January and another massive chunk will have abandoned them by February... So why do people bother setting them and is there a better way? I think setting goals is way more effective than creating resolutions - even though they can be helpful. Thinking about resolutions at this time of year can be great as a marker of time and to get a bit of leverage on resetting goals BUT just plucking a resolution for the sake of it is almost doomed to fail.... In this episode Shandra reveals a famous goal setting study that is often quoted that is actually a lie and the one that is true. She talks you through: •How and why resolutions and goals can go badly •What to look out for when setting resolutions or goals •3 research insights you can actually use in real life •The way to do it that sets you up to be more likely to succeed •The link between mindfulness meditation and setting goals Shandra also invites you to come along to her event - Redefine. Creating a work life you don't want to escape from
January 7, 2019 • 22 MIN
Do you do a countdown until your holidays....? Then when you're on holidays you do the reverse countdown and dread the return to work...? Can you imagine doing work you don't feel the need to escape from? This it is actually possible for you! In this episode Shandra talks about her pre-Christmas realisation about the work and life she has created - on the other side of burnout. She shares: 1. how to recognise if you are in a work situation you do want to escape from 2. How to create work you don't feel you need to escape from 3. And the four ingredients you will need to do it "Every human has four endowments - self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom... The power to choose, to respond, to change." Stephen Covey You may not be able to escape your work life right away, but giving it some thought now will help you make a start. Managing Your Inner - and Outer - Critic
December 26, 2018 • 16 MIN
Do you have an Inner Critic? Is it sometimes very loud and bossy and need managing? Yep me too... Years ago, when I was stressed and exhausted being an over achiever, my sister took me to a Buddhist meditation night... Although I struggled with the meditation - I couldn't sit still! - I found it interesting and so I bought a book written by one of the Monks. I liked him because although he was a full robe wearing monk, he had a very down to earth real way about him and a quirky sense of humour which I liked. The book includes a stack of different personal stories and anecdotes that he uses as lessons for achieving - or at least pursuing happiness. I was reminded of one of those stories recently so wanted to share it to see if it gives you a useful approach to managing your own inner critic - and our outer one when we are triggered by others we come across. I hope you enjoy it and can try out this approach when you next catch your critic coming out to play! x Shandra Thank you for listening!

December 19, 2018 • 14 MIN
Do you ever ask yourself why are you working so hard? What's it all about or for anyway? Questioning this is common - not just at this time of year, although it is pretty common as the end of the year comes closer and people start to feel a bit tired and ratty... Shandra had a conversation recently that included someone asking this rhetorical question, and although it wasn't appropriate for her to share it at the time, a little story came to mind that highlights how important it is to ask this question, to consider how you answer it and most importantly what you do about it! In this episode Shandra share's a story about a Mexican fisherman - disclaimer: includes a bit of an occasional dodgy Mexican accent - and how you can this story as a tool to reflect on what you're doing for work and in your life right now, especially as you hopefully go into some time off over the end of the year... Have a listen and you can see what the moral of the story is, which character you are most like and what it prompts for you in your own situation. Thanks for listening!

If you're in business for yourself it can be hard to do all the things you need to do and if most of your circle of friends and family are employees, then it's hard for them to really understand what's going on for you... Equally - if you're employed in a leadership position, then that can be really lonely too - it's not that easy to find people you can talk openly about your aspirations as often the people in your life have a vested interest in the choices you make.... So in this episode Shandra looks at the five different types of support you need and how you can get it... Thank you for listening!
