As leaders, we need to make big and important decisions throughout our careers. And this question has guided me to choose the right ones.
We all know that I've said this line quite a lot, and that is "What does right look like?".
A co-worker of mine even bought me a shirt that has that phrase printed! You can say that it is one of my favorite mottos not just as a leader but also as an individual person.
This question serves me as my North Star, and I hope it could do the same for you.

Ep 80 Fun Leaders Are NOT Always Effective Leaders
January 18, 2022 • 8 MIN
Being a leader is a lot like being a parent.....Wait, say what!? Do you want to have a GREAT team or a bratty team? If you're the fun leader ALL the time you WILL have the latter and funny leadership are not always effective.
What Daryl? In this episode we discuss the top reasons why fun leaders are NOT always effective leaders and why fun leaders often struggle.
Being a leader comes with responsibility, yup I know, no one likes adulting but that's the honest truth. There are tough things that leaders need to do and it's not fun and games all the time. Difficult conversations, performance management, administrative tasks, budget. etc... there are always tough decisions to be made and no matter what trickery you use there are always team members that struggle.
Unfortunately there is no silver bullet to being an effective leader, but there are things you can do to find the balance....an remember don't be a task master, but don't be just the fun leader either.

Ep 78 Why Is Empathy Important In A Leader & How Can it Be A Superpower? With Rob Volpe
January 6, 2022 • 64 MIN
There is an empathy crisis happening globally right now. Did you know that 33% of people cannot see the viewpoint of others?
Empathy can be seen as a five letter word to some people, but to Empathy Activist Rob Volpe Empathy is the "E" word.
When people think about being empathetic they get scared, confused, frustrated or don't understand. They think they have to give up their own beliefs system to be empathetic. NOT TRUE! Empathy is about understanding the gap between what is going on with another person and yourself and provides the opportunity to compromise, collaboration, and work toward solution and resolution. Simply said, empathy can be defined in two words: understanding and connection.
This episode is jammed packed with tips, tactics, examples and explanation you won't want to miss!
Highlights:
The difference between Sympathy and Empathy:
Sympathy is a feeling FOR someone, that can create a power dynamic (not always in a bad way).
Empathy is a feeling with someone, to be able to feel what the other is feeling and truly understand what is happening for that person at that moment in time.
Cognitive Empathy and Why it is important in the workplace: stepping into someone else's shoes to understand where they are coming from and figuring out how you can co-exist
In Rob's new book, Tell Me More About That: Solving The Empathy Crisis, he provides the exact 5 Steps to Being Empathetic in life, at work and as a leader:
1. Dismantle Judgement - Self Awareness
2. Asking Good Questions - Tell Me More About That
3. Actively Listen - Be Present
4. Integrating Into Your Understanding - Put Your Own Perspective Aside
5. Using Solution Imagination - Putting Yourself Into The Shoes Of Somebody Else

Ep 74 Delegation Of Authority: Allowing The Team To Be One Step Ahead Of The Leader- Tom Miner Part 2
December 30, 2021 • 40 MIN
Watch Part 1 Here: https://youtu.be/W81tPYsN4YE
The leader of today, recognizes that the "busy" leader is NOT the effective leader. The effective leader will trust the team, delegate appropriately and empower the team to make decisions AND make mistakes. Strong leaders will observe and support and recognize the team is normally one step ahead of them. In this interview and leadership training from the Leading Through Chaos Summit, Tom Miner shares his experience of leading teams during crisis and emergencies and how to lead effectively after leading in less than normal circumstances in 2020 & 2021. "We must take the normal business model and scrap it" what used to work is not going to work anymore. Leaders must be agile and able to pivot quickly to stay relevant. If we take care of the people, they will take care of the business.
Tom retired from Pierce County after 27 years with the Sheriff’s department and 7 years with the Pierce County Department of Emergency Management. While with the Sheriff’s department he was responsible for all search and rescue activity in the county, responding to hundreds of SAR missions throughout the region and representing law enforcement in the county EOC during disaster operations.
Tom left the Sheriff’s department as a Major in 2003 to join PCDEM as the Program Manager for Washington States US&R Task Force, (WATF 1) part of FEMA’s National Urban Search and Rescue program.
Tom has served as a US&R Task Force Leader and is a member of the FEMA Incident Support Team (IST) and was the White Incident Support Team leader from 2010 to December 2014.
He has responded to a long list of emergencies and disasters to include 1994 Northridge Earthquake, the Oklahoma City Bombing, 9/11 at ETC & the Pentagon, Shuttle Columbia search & 9 hurricanes including Katrina & Irma (Puerto Rico)

Ep 76 The Human Side of Crisis, Leading Teams in Unprecedented Times : A Former Fire Chief's Story - Pt. 2
December 30, 2021 • 26 MIN
Jamie Coutts, Host of Podcast, Growing Up Fire and one of the stars of Discovery Channel's Hellfire Hero's,28 years in the fire service, Jamie discusses with me the different types of stress that you encounter in leading teams during crisis, things you think of and things you don't that you should. Jamie discusses the critical leadership tactics when you really have to think outside the box, and recognize nothing you learned in the books will help you at the moment in time. Step back, evaluate the situation and make a plan of action to protect the lives and safety of the people in the community and your team.
Since retirement from the fire service, Jamie works in private industry and continues to lead but in a different way. In this interview he reflects on leading teams during unprecedented times and offers the tried and tested methods he used while leading the Slave Lake firefighters (volunteer and paid) during a fire that destroyed most of the Town. One of the most important decisions he made and still stands by today, was recognizing the human side of leadership and that he is leading people first, and the human side of crisis can be worse than the actual event. The fire fighters he was leading were not only fighting to save the town, but also dealing with loss of their homes, distraught and scared family members and emotions were running high. As a leader he had to give permission to the team to take care of themselves and their family despite the numerous fires burning around them. Those things still hold true today, regardless of the situation, you need to recognize the people, the stress they are not saying and adapt your plan.
Jamie provides insights on prioritizing tasks and supporting teams while working remotely and how he would monitor for continued high performance. In crisis and unfamiliar situations humans have a tendency to say no first; Jamie says we need to start with yes and then figure out the how later, the how does not need to be perfect we just need to do something. This philosophy holds true in our current environment, if we were to ask business owners and corporations about having all of their staff working from home prior to 2020 it would have been a resounding no, yet for the most part we've done it, has it been perfect, no, but we continue to refine and move forward each time we are thrown a curve ball.

Ep 73 Allowing The Team To Be One Step Ahead Of The Leader- Tom Miner Part 1
December 21, 2021 • 23 MIN

Ep 68 10 Minute Leadership Tactic- Are You Truly Listening OR or Are You Formulating Your Response
December 9, 2021 • 9 MIN
We've all heard the phrase you were given two ears and one mouth for a reason.
On this episode we talk about active listening and the key to winning the war on focusing on the conversation. Do you spend more time formulating the response to your team in your head when you ask for an explanation? Do you have a preconceived idea and don't listen to the story? If so you are doing yourself and your team a huge disservice.
As leaders we need to be locked into what someone is saying to be truly listening to what someone is saying instead of formulating our response or having a preconceived notion before the person talks. Restatement is the key to success, slow down and listen, when you reflect back to whoever you are talking to you are giving them, point one, two three of what you have hear. When you are actively listening you are giving the attention to the conversation that it deserves.
With open ears and open minds, join in and comment on the conversation and discover if you are truly listening or are you formulating your response and missing the story.

Ep 65 Leaders Serve BUT Are Also Responsible & Accountable
November 30, 2021 • 5 MIN
👆 Don't miss a release! Hit Like & Subscribe now ddbtube.com
Why don't I use the term servant leadership? Leaders serve teams so why not use it? I think it misses a huge point in which leadership is all about. Ultimately the leader is accountable for the outcome. A servant in the purest form of the word serves. Being a leader is not just that, one of the challenges and "burdens" of being a leader is to drive results and outcomes, it's what's expected of you! Don't get me wrong, there is a component of leading that does serve, but it's not the entire job.
