American cities of the future – what might they look like, and how are they going to be funded? A sweeping, 1 trillion dollar infrastructure package announced by Joe Biden includes a plan for invigorating the economy and modernizing urban America. Money for roads and bridges, water and power systems, broadband and electric vehicles has been promised, but it’s leadership at local level that’s needed to facilitate all this change. In episode 5 of Rebuilding America, Stephen is joined by Robert O’Neill, fellow at the Riley Center for Liveable Communities College of Charleston, and also former Executive Director of the International City and County Management Association, known as the ICMA. Karen Pinkos, City Manager in El Cerrito, California, also shares her insight into what it will take to rebuild America and talks to Stephen about smart cities.
