Kevin and Howard talk about the coaching technique that leads to more client breakthroughs than just about any other: questions that require the client to move from generalities to specifics.

It's such a simple move, and tactically quite easy to do; why do coaches have such resistance to it? Largely because it means we have to give up control of the direction of the conversation, and because we have to abandon all our clever suggestions and deep dives into psychology. We lose what we perceive to be our "professional edge" - knowing more than the client, and having the ability to "fix" them.

Questions about "what actually happened" vs "what happens" allow our clients to pierce their armor of their airtight stories, reveal blind spots in their perception, and discover new insights. Try it and let us know what happens. Or, even better, what actually happened.
