Welcome to the Great Work of Your Life.

My name is Rev. Ian White Maher, and I’m the minister of the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church in Alexandria, VA. And I believe that each of us has a great work that has been laid down before us by the Divine. The great work of your life does not mean fame or money or power; it means becoming who you are meant to be.

And finding out who you are meant to be has never been more important than right now because what we are doing, as a culture, as a nation, as a world, is not working. And we know this because the world is crying out for relief. More than ever, we need people willing to awaken to who they really are.

We say there is a climate crisis, a refugee crisis, an income inequality crisis, a war crisis. And we say, if only we can empower the right scientists or the right diplomats or the right educators, then we can solve our problems. But those are not the problems we face. The problems are greed, selfishness, heartbreak, indifference, and alienation. These are spiritual problems and we cannot think our way out of spiritual problems. We need spiritual solutions. And you are called to be part of this solution by living out the great work of your life.

The following sermons are designed to be listened to in series, like chapters on a theme. In our free online community, we’ve taken short clips to highlight passages from the sermon to help you reflect on what these ideas might mean for you as it relates to the great work of your life. You can join the conversation at community.mvuc.org. It’s a safe place to connect and engage with other seekers, like yourself, who are hoping to bring into being what Charles Eisenstein calls “the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.”

The longing you feel in your heart is not a mistake. A great work has been laid down before you by the Divine. Come discover what this means. Join us at community.mvuc.org
