That's Teaching Life
Don't push yourself above your limits
March 28, 2022
An unconventional idea? Going against the grain? Don't push yourself to your limits!
You're listening to that, That's Life podcast by Richard Butler where I talk about everything to do with life and how to make it better.

Hey, how you doing happy Monday and if you are listening to this on any other day, well happy whatever day it may be. Um today I want to talk about something that's been on my mind for a while and I think it's troubled me a little bit that sometimes I feel I'm not doing the best that I can do with my life, I feel that I can always do better. And I look at others and I say, but they're doing better.

But they have this, they have that now. I don't do it so much and I don't always compare myself to others, but sometimes I can't compare myself to myself and I say, rich, you can do better than this. I mean, you gotta work harder. You've got to do more because you want to be more because we are told that aren't we do more to be more. And you know, when we look at social media, when we look at our Facebooks, when we look at our Tiktok's, if you have Tiktok or instagram people show a version of their life, which might not always be the right version. I mean, of course they're going to show the best parts of our life and they're going to take that photograph and it's going to be just picture perfect because that's what we want to show a picture perfect life, but sometimes life is not like that. And I mean if life was always picture perfect, it would probably be a little bit boring to be honest And I think you know, the the trials and tribulations of life, the obstacles that we come up come up against really do help us appreciate what we have.

And I mean I started january a little bit uh I guess a little bit blue shall we say, because I didn't feel that things were going the way they should. And even recently I kind of thought, well maybe my business is not growing the way it is and then my wife gives me that, you know, good old talk that only only a good Catalan woman can give and it's like listen, you're doing really well, you've only been in business a year and you're doing well, so relax. But a lot of times I just want more. So today in the podcast we're going to do a little bit of a reflection on acknowledging that you can only do so much and to be okay with it, I want you to listen to what I'm going to say now I want you to internalize it and then I'm going to leave you with some questions to reflect on, I acknowledge that I can only do so much and I'm okay with it. I let go of the idea that I can always do more if only I try harder.

I know I have limits because after all I am only human, I leave superhero efforts to the superheroes and enjoy doing what I can without putting undue stress on myself. I strive to recognize my limits and stay within them. There's nothing wrong with stretching my limits here and there. But continuously trying to work past them only sets me up for failure. Will I stay within my limits? I choose success learning to stay within my limits is just like exercising. If I push my muscles beyond their capabilities, I cause injury which can set me back even further. Then when I started however, I can stretch them little by little in the same way, I can challenge myself to try new things just as long as I carefully schedule my time and efforts based on what I know I can do. If someone asks me to do something, I do not have the time or skills for I confidently say no, this is far better than misleading them today and disappointing them tomorrow. I can achieve more by purposely staying within my limits.

Planning my actions around my current skills and abilities allows me to spend my time doing what I know I can do. I avoid wasting my time and energy with the impossible today. I choose to recognize my limits and direct my energy towards performing well within my limits. In this way I am a success. I want you to listen to that again because I think it's so powerful sometimes we're told you've got to push yourself to the limit. But what happens? You do break that muscle, you do damage that muscle and then it sets you back now. It seems a little bit of a strange concept and a strange thing for a coach to say. But maybe if you grow within your limits, then your limits grow and then you grow in within those new limits. So maybe there's a little bit of sense in what I'm saying today. Okay, so here are the self reflection questions.

Have I learned to say no when people ask too much of me, what happens to me when I'm overstretched do I set myself up for success by accurately scheduling my time. Let me answer those questions for you. Have I learned to say no when people ask too much of me. Well I tried to do it more. I mean I try and have time during the day, which is a little bit of downtime or in the morning because yes, I could work more hours, but then I get more tired and then I don't perform as well And that leads me to the answer to # two. What happens to me when I'm overstretched? I get tired, I overeat when I overeat, I get more tired and cranky and then I feel bad because I haven't been to the gym either. And then that makes me feel even worse and it's not good and the final question, do I set myself up for success by accurately scheduling my time. Well that's an area I could improve in that.

Sometimes I might manage my time as best I could, but I do have time slots for everything and I try not to, for example, wow, I'm gonna say this, I try not to go for six hours and ago with clients. I try and break up my time. Sometimes it's not possible, but I try the best I can and if you know me and if you follow me on linkedin or on facebook or instagram, you know that I do like to take my little weekends away because I do feel that I recharge on them and you must schedule in downtime as well. So my thought for today is listen to this podcast Twice three times 4 times and ask yourself, are you okay with being okay if you enjoy this podcast, do make sure that you give it a like share, subscribe and have a wonderful week.
