Welcome to the very first episode of Coaching for a Living where your host, Alisa Barcan, gives you the lowdown of the podcast, the story behind its name, who it's for, the format, and what to expect from future episodes. She also shares three business tips for coaches who are at the beginning of their coaching journeys.

Here's a snippet of the show. Enjoy!

Let me tell you a bit about the name coaching for a living. It has a double meaning.

The first one is the obvious one – making a living from coaching. And as part of the discussions we’ll have on the podcast, a big emphasis will be on profitability and financial viability. Because making a living is another way of saying making money from coaching, enough to sustain you and your business financially.

That’s what financial viability is, but many coaches, and other professionals for that matter, don’t like talking about money. Well, I do. I have a background in accountancy and business analysis, so money and finances are two of my favourite subjects.

The second meaning of the name coaching for a living has to do with the coaching calling that many of us feel, the desire to help people transform their lives, which is why most of us become coaches. Not for the money, but for the satisfaction it gives us personally. We coach because coaching gives us a purpose, it makes us feel alive – hence coaching for a living.

There is a duality here though. Being in it for the money alone is not the answer, but becoming a coach and starting a business without thinking of the financial aspect of it is not ideal either.

So, I am an advocate that it should be both. It’s OK to want to help people AND make money while doing it – the two are not mutually exclusive.
