That's Teaching Life
The C Word
July 5, 2021
In this episode I talk about the C word - no not that one sheesh!
You're listening to that, That's Life podcast by Richard Butler. Where I talk about everything to do with life and how to make it better guys. It's Richard Butler here with another podcast and oh my God, it's been so long since I've actually done a podcast. I think it could be three weeks, maybe four weeks.

Well, I'm going to tell you about what happened to me and what happened to me that I couldn't podcast or I didn't, should I say it? I didn't feel like podcasting. So what's been happening? Well, the first week of june we went away and I was away on the monday. So I got a podcast and I hadn't anything lined up or prerecorded. Oops, did I say pre recorded? Yeah, some of these can be pre recorded, but today it isn't, today is actually monday fifth of july. But that was that and then the following week I think I was sick and the week after that, the monday could have been the monday of my birthday and then I was away on the friday. And then the following monday I was at home. I think I didn't go to the office. I don't know, there was an excuse for every single monday. So here's what I learned. The less you do have something, the less you want to do of it. And it's not that I don't enjoy podcasting.

I mean I really like podcasting, but once you get out of the habit, it's really, really difficult to get back into the habit and that can be good or bad. It happened to me with the gym. Um, I went religiously every single day for about maybe six weeks And then I stopped one day and then I said, I'll go the next day and the next day. I said, I'll go the next day and the day after that I said, go the next day and you know what happened?

I didn't go and now I've returned to the gym. But it's so simple to be consistently doing nothing and that's the truth. It's so simple to get out of the habit and then not continue to do what you should be doing or should I say it's really easy to continue um not doing it because you just go well I'll do it tomorrow and that's what happened to me. So I think I've talked about this quite a lot but I think we have to talk about the C. Word and the C. Word is consistency because if you do something consistently it becomes a habit. If you don't do it consistently it also becomes a habit. So eating badly consistently becomes a habit. Not going to the gym consistently becomes a habit.

Walking to work every day consistently becomes a habit. So what are you doing or not doing that is becoming a habit and that is actually affecting well, you taking more action and you becoming the person you want to become because what I found is I have to write everything down. If I don't write things down, I don't do them now, I can go to my to do list today and I can take off podcasting, I've done lots today um in various different things that I had to do. But the thing is that I wrote it down and again, I found if I'm not consistent with writing on my to do list the night before the morning before I go to work, it becomes impossible for me to get things done. Have you thought about that? Have you thought about what you consistently do in your life? Maybe it's that you consistently have a drink every single day or you consistently smoke or maybe it's a good habit.

Maybe you can consistently go to the gym, which is excellent, but whatever you do consistently is what becomes a habit, be that good or bad. So what can you do? Well, start with small steps, start with saying, okay, I'm gonna walk down to the shops every day, I'm gonna walk down uh the apartment block instead of getting the lift, I'm gonna walk down the stairs or in work and started getting the lift, I'm gonna walk up the stairs. Unless you Sort of work on the 57th floor, then it might be a little bit more tricky, but little things will make you feel better, consistent. Little things will make you feel better and consistent. Bad things will also make you feel well, maybe better in the long term that a little bit of chocolate, but that one slice of chocolate becomes a block of chocolate becomes a block of chocolate every day. And then before you know it, you put on the kilos or the stones are pounds.

I don't get stones and pounds. I only do kilos. But you see what happens, that if you do something consistently, you will get consistent results and that's not a good or a bad thing. I mean, it can be good or a bad thing, but consistency itself doesn't distinguish between good about it. Just distinguishes, you know, I'm always doing this or this person is always doing this. So let's continue doing it. So there's my thought for today. Well, my thought is I'm going to be consistent and you will see a podcast every single monday. Okay, I promise that. But my thought for today is try to be more consistent in the good things and less consistent in the bad things. I'll talk to you next week.
