What do you (really) focus on?

You're listening to the that's Life podcast by Richard Butler. Where I talk about everything to do with life and how to make it better. Hey and welcome along to today's podcast. 

Today's podcast is all about focus. And I was wondering and I wanted to ask you the question, what are you focusing on right now? Before you answer? Just take a while to listen to what I'm going to say about focus because I'm not talking about the job. I'm not talking about, you know, Oh, I'm focusing on this project. Oh, I'm focusing on getting a promotion. I mean, what is your focus day today? You may be wondering what do I mean by that? But when you think about it over the last two years for many people, including myself, the focus was Covid. I mean everywhere returned there was Covid on the news covered in the newspapers. Covid dominated over every other sort of news items. We heard about what was happening in other countries. 

We heard about, you know, death, we heard about recovery, we heard about vaccines, we heard about anti vaccines. Everything was Covid. And then That's kind of gone away now because everybody's focus or a lot of people's focus is now on what is happening currently as of March 2022 in Russia and Ukraine. And you might not realize how much time you're focusing on this now. I mean, I can tell you that I'll probably focus a little bit too much time. I suddenly realized it this morning that I'm focusing too much time on looking at the news to see what's going on? No, I don't mean that we shouldn't look at the news and we shouldn't know what's going on. 

But when you focus on so much negativity that is in the news, it brings you down. I mean you start to believe that the world is a horrendous place. You start to believe that well, you start to believe lots of things and then as you go deeper into this rabbit hole, you start to form views and then people start to think, well, you know, all the Russians are bad, all the Ukrainians are good, all the european leaders are doing their best and then you might get sidetracked into hearing what people say that it's all an economic ploy or it's all not fabricated, but it's all being orchestrated by a new world order and then you focus on these things. 

So I want you to think about today what it is that you are really focusing on that you might not even realize. I mean those things that are taking up a lot of your time. Um are you focusing on things that are bad for you? I mean the news? Are you focusing on the good, that's in the world because here's what I see, the more I focus on something, the more I get of it and the mind doesn't care whether that's good or bad. I mean the subconscious doesn't have any idea whether it's good or bad. It's just here's a an instruction to say focus on this and it focuses, I mean, has it ever happened to you? And I've talked about this before, that somebody has talked about a car or you've seen a car, you've seen a Tesla, a red Tesla and then suddenly when you're walking down the street, you see another red Tesla. 

I mean it happened to me one time I was working with a client and he was telling me about his jeep that he had and I never really noticed those jeeps. But as I finished the session with him and I went down to the, to the store just beside my apartment. What did I say? I saw one of the jeeps that he had talked about. I saw the model that he had now. Why? Because like my my subconscious have been given this idea of, oh, look out for one of those. And somehow I was more focused on looking at cars that were that particular model. Now, you might not realize that it happens. But I mean, test it out, think about something, think about a card. I mean, I don't think about some really rare car, but just a common car that you might choose a color, you might say, well actually a green, a green Volkswagen beetle and you will see more Volkswagen beetles, You might not see the exact green one that you're looking for, but sometimes you will and you'll be amazed that where you focus your energy goes, the more you focus on something, the more you will see of it, the more you will perceive it, the more it will come into your life. 

So my thought for this podcast is take a focus inventory and think about what you're focusing on and then ask yourself, is this the right thing to be focusing on? And I mean not just on work things, this is on things that you are doing. Like checking your phone, checking instagram, checking facebook. I'm focusing on these things too much and I didn't even realize until I heard Richard say this in the podcast.
