Dispersion
December 20, 2020
This week’s Great Reset Salon will consider the implications - for good and ill - of Dispersion: Dispersion from cities, dispersion from a workplace - and in some ways, dispersion from each other as people seek non-urban areas to shelter in place.
For many years, the trend in migration globally has been toward urbanization, as people - and particularly young people - move to cities to enjoy the cultural and other amenities possible in dense urban environs. Yet Covid has shown us that density is not your friend in a pandemic; and that - coupled with the fact that many amenities like live music, restaurants, bars, museums, spectator sports and other live events are impossible at this time, many seem to be concluding that the risk sans amenities may no longer be worth the premium urban price tag. Jack Dorsey, the CEO of twitter recently cut his workforce loose to go “all in” on remote work, saying that, “concentration in San Francisco is not serving us any longer.” Other big tech companies are following suit. This week’s Great Reset Salon will consider the implications - for good and ill - of Dispersion: Dispersion from cities, dispersion from a workplace - and in some ways, dispersion from each other as people seek non-urban areas to shelter in place. We can think about the unequal impact on asset classes, geographies, and sectors- but also about what Dispersion means for societies. Will we see people organizing in new ways, around new values, behaviors, interests or geographies, when they are no longer “New Yorkers” for example? What about the “survivors guilt” that comes along with those who are able to flee ravaged cities, versus those who are forced to stay? And finally - what is the longer term outlook for cities? This will certainly be the first of many discussions we have on this topic, as we seek to find our way through these challenging times. We look forward to having you, and to a great discussion this week.
