How to perform at the highest levels in everything that you do
June 17, 2021
In this episode, we talk about a great practice that will help you improve your performance dramatically.
Here's a quick tip on how you can improve your performance no matter what you're trying to do. So if you were preparing for a job interview or you are getting ready to take a major exam or you are going out for a run or maybe you are going to perform some music, and this is something that I wish I had done a lot more in the past, but it's something that I'm learning is really, really important, the more you start moving up in life. And this is to warm up, and I know it sounds simple, but this is really, really important advice. Warming up will help you improve your performance.

Now, here's what I mean, and I mean warming up, let's say that you are a B2B salesperson. Well, if you just get on a call, you feel like you're like a natural-born salesperson, You're doing it with a cold start, and you're probably not giving yourself the best chance for you to be able to close that sale as a B2B salesperson if you had warmed up. And by warming up, let's say that you are practicing role-playing or you are reading books about sales, or you're reading articles about sales, this will start mentally preparing yourself towards what you're actually going after and that process once you started it would be much easier because you will have warmed up. So this is a big fail for me. When I was applying to business schools, I was studying for the GMAT, and now that I look back, remember when I took the GMAT, there was this other girl studying for the GMAT in the GMAT test center, and I was like, what is she studying? What is she studying for? The GMAT for the test is like today, um I don't think she's gonna learn anything new.

So while she's like sitting there studying for the GMAT, I went outside, and I loaded up a bowl, and I just started smoking weed because I wanted to be relaxed for this test. And I took the test, but now that I think about it, I think I could have done much better if I had actually studied a little bit right before because studying for the test will get you mentally prepared, it'll start engaging your brain and will get you ready to perform at a much higher level.  Versus if you were just to take this test without any kind of preparation and you did it with a cold start. Well, then you're using the first couple of hours to get your brain to start moving in that mode. Thinking in that style, right? But warming up would have saved you.

So instead of going out to my car and smoking weed right before the GMAT has started, I think if I had actually just sat there and worked out some basic GMAT problems, not even something really complicated just to get the blood flowing into my brain, I think I would have done much better. So now, warming up is something that I try to build into each one of my processes.

So if I have a sales call, for example, I will warm up with some material about sales. If I am going out for a run instead of just running from a cold start, I will actually warm up a little bit so I can get better performance and not have to injure myself. So just warming up, no matter what kind of task you're doing, ask yourself what can you do to warm up just to get your brain prepped for the activity that you're about to engage in? And this will help you improve your performance dramatically. So I hope this helps. This is Robin Copernicus. Boom bam. I'm out.
