WWJD Goes Deep #18 Stop the Nonsense
So many folks are falling prey to some of the most unethical training advice when it comes to stopping unwanted behaviors from a dog. I hear about it daily, its not about any particular trainer, its the philosophy that is deeply flawed, not only does it not work, it keeps owners struggling and most of the time it makes the behavior worse. Lets use this basic concept of a dog rushing a door and barking and jumping up on a door when guests come over and knock or ring the doorbell. This is a protocol that we stop in seconds, successfully every time, that’s thousands of times. This is a protocol that folks who follow us virtually also stop tens of thousands of times on their own.

Lets stick to the basics, we do both reward based training (when we want to train a behavior or increase a behavior) we apply a punisher (which has been hijacked to mean abuse, but it is the farthest thing from abuse) it is just the opposite of a reward and that is used to eliminate or decrease a behavior. Those are just the facts and is common learning theory for dogs.

So when a client is told to shove constant treats in a dogs mouth when they are rushing at the door, barking and jumping, well if you are going to use a reward based system you are going to increase the behavior, and guess what, you do, the dog not only does not stop it will most likely do it more and more. How do we know, because its not only fact its proven over and over again.

So if you want to eliminate the behavior you need to apply a punisher instead, you say NO nice and calmly and then apply a punisher, for us we prefer a remote collar or a bunker. Why? Not works, its simple and it is effective. That is your step one, after you have stopped the behavior you then can train the dog what you want the dog to do, or reinforce a known command.

So be aware of folks that are trying to tell you to use a reward based approach to stop a bad behavior, you are being lied to, you are being bamboozled, you are wasting your time, spend weeks or months doing something that has no end in site but money wasted and a frustrated owner. Learn how to stop a bad/unwanted behavior first before you move onto the reward part.
