Sister Clare Carter was raised Catholic in West Roxbury MA. In 1977 she encountered the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist order at a peace vigil in front of Faneuil Hall in Boston and 4 years later ordained as nun assuming her order’s vows of healing the world of materialism and violence through the spiritual practices of chanting, prayer, constructing peace pagodas, and pilgrimage. She has participated in multiple pilgrimages for peace and justice, both locally and internationally, in an effort to witness to the suffering and inspiring transformation. Sister Clare Carter was the co-founder of the Interfaith Pilgrimage of the Middle Passage, a year-long spiritual journey tracing the history and impact of slavery starting in Massachusetts walking down the eastern seaboard to New Orleans, through the Caribbean, to the slave dungeons of West Africa, culminating ultimately in South Africa.
