April 28, 2023
Alien Weaponry is a New Zealand thrash metal band that was formed in Waipu in 2010. The band consists of brothers Henry de Jong (drums) and Lewis de Jong (guitar, vocals), and Ethan Trembath (bass). Alien Weaponry's music is characterized by its high-energy, guitar-driven sound, which draws on a range of influences, including thrash metal, punk, and Maori culture. The band's lyrics are primarily sung in te reo Maori (the Maori language) and English, and often explore themes of Maori history, culture, and mythology, as well as social and environmental issues. Alien Weaponry released their debut album, "Tū," in 2018, which received critical acclaim and earned the band several awards, including Best Rock Album at the New Zealand Music Awards. The album's lead single, "Kai Tangata," also won the prestigious APRA Silver Scroll award for best songwriting. The band has since toured extensively throughout New Zealand, Australia, Europe, and the United States, including supporting Metallica on their WorldWired Tour in 2019. Alien Weaponry is also known for their high-energy live shows, which feature traditional Maori instruments and haka (Maori war dance) performances. They have quickly gained a reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative metal bands in the world today.
