Stressproof master and coach Glenn Murphy talks with me about the particular challenges of maintaining healthy habits during pandemic and lockdown. One of the biggest hurdles people face these days is a stress-ridden nervous system. When our bodies perceive threat, they demand immediate action. And for many of us, that action is binge eating, binge watching, or engaging in other forms of "it-feels-good-now-but-i'm-going-to-regret-it-tomorrow-if-not-sooner" self-soothing. Or, if our neurology tends towards collapse, that action might be extreme inaction - depression, not caring, and letting go of positive habits that we know enrich our lives. During social distancing, we are missing out on the most powerful tool in the mammal's mental health toolkit: co-regulation with other mammals. Now more than ever, we must master the art of self-regulation of emotional and neurological state. The highlight of the conversation, from my perspective, is Glenn's prescription for a morning routine that allows us to return to something like a neurological baseline.
