Put Kids in Control with Naomi Fisher
March 16, 2021
Some of you know a little about my backstory. I’ve been an entrepreneur for most of my working life… I love the freedom to choose what I do, how I structure my days, where I invest in my personal development and in my business. Freedom is EVERYTHING to me. I want to live my best life now, to wake up every day excited for what lies ahead, and to have choice in the matter. That’s why I’m excited to speak with today’s guest, Naomi Fisher. She went from working in a hand made cake factory, a highly stressful job where she didn’t even have control over her break times, to now a clinical psychologist and author of Changing our Minds: How Children can take Control of their own Learning. In her book, she argues why having control, having autonomy in learning and life is essential for growth, health and happiness. We’ll dive in deeply into this topic, which I think is especially relevant given the world we live in right now, where in the battle against the pandemic, much of our collective control over our lives is greatly reduced. We’ll examine the affects of a controlled environment on kids who spend much of their childhood in the school system, where like Naomi experienced, you have to raise your hand to go to the bathroom. She is a mother to two self-directed learners who were unschooled for 6 years, then attended a Sudbury-model school in Paris and now are members of the Self-Managed Learning College in Hove. Get ready to dive into the psychology of self-directed learning: why it works, how it works and how to make it work for you and your family.
