IoT Podcast: Over the Air
Q&A with Rob Tiffany Part 2: Digital Twins, Edge Vs Cloud Computing & Industrial IoT
June 23, 2022
In this episode of Over the Air - IoT, Connected Devices, & the Journey, Ryan Prosser, CEO of Very is joined by Rob Tiffany, Managing Director at Digital Insights and Bill Flaherty, Director of Hardware Engineering at Very.
In this Q&A session, they discussed the essentiality of digital twin technologies, and how they are evolving to restructure the operations of IIoT to fulfill digital transformation objectives. They investigate how digital twins are gaining traction among industry engineers, researchers, and academics, as well as how they might improve the efficacy, intelligence, and resilience of manufacturing and production systems.

Businesses have been using digital technologies to improve the efficacy and efficiency of their processes for years. Organizations now conduct the hard lifting in software, from product development and prototyping to simulating and managing complicated physical operations. Today, these forward-thinking digital businesses are constructing "digital twins," or virtual copies of real-life physical products and processes, to take their data-driven processes to the next level.

Although edge compute capacity can be used to supercharge digital twins by creating real-time links to live environments and reducing network latency and time to insight, Rob points out that edge computing may be unsuitable for applications with stringent security requirements or applications that do not require immediate insight, and that a traditional cloud computing strategy with centralized servers may be less risky, less cumbersome and more desirable.

Rob Tiffany is Founder and Managing Director at Digital Insights. Rob served as Vice President and Head of IoT Strategy at Ericsson, driving 5G connection management for IoT devices. Spending most of his career at Microsoft, Rob was Global Technology Lead for the Azure IoT cloud platform and co-authored its reference architecture. Rob is an industry analyst working around wireless communications, IoT, digital twins, etc. As Very's Director of Hardware Engineering, Bill has a natural love of taking a complicated problem, breaking it down to its base level, and then coming up with a solution.
